Giuliano Hazan Opens Up His Sarasota Home for Cooking Classes

Yes, he’s related to the grand dame of Italian cookery, Marcella, and don’t let some extra time in the car be a deterrent from this one-of-a-kind experience.

BY July 7, 2017

If you know a thing or two about Italian cooking, the name "Marcella" barely needs context.

Long before Giada De Laurentiis or even Lidia Bastianich lit up the small screen, Marcella Hazan imported recipes from across the Boot, much like her peer Julia Child did for French cuisine. Her tomes have been dog-eared and splattered with red sauce for nearly half a century, establishing a canon of cooking that others have borrowed, interpreted and pulled from.

Nowadays, her only son, Giuliano, is carrying on the family tradition. He has embraced what his mother left behind and forged a path for himself as an internationally renowned cooking instructor and cookbook author, writing five books (most recently Hazan Family Favorites) and winning the prestigious Cooking Teacher of the Year award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals.

This year, for the first time ever, he and his wife, food historian Lael Hazan, are opening up their Sarasota home for intimate weekend dinner party classes. Each runs from 5:30-9:30 p.m., is limited to 10 participants and includes preparing a four-course meal paired with Italian wines. Tickets for each session are $150 per person—but you may find yourself wanting to drive the extra miles to spend as much time as possible in their kitchen for a glimpse into the culinary secrets of a legendary family.
