Calendar Highlight: Best of Enemies

The stirring production by Florida Rep opens tomorrow.

BY November 14, 2016

The notion that a KKK chapter leader and an African-American civil rights leader not only could manage to work together on the same steering committee but also would grow to befriend each another seems a stretch, even for a play. But the plot at the root of Best of Enemies, based on an Osha Gray Davidson book by the same name, is true. Florida Repertory Theatre tackles the adaptation of the pair’s real relationship, which began to form in 1971 during court-ordered desegregation in Durham, North Carolina. It will be a tense, sobering but illuminating ride, running Nov. 15 through Dec. 15.
