About 30 Percent of Cancer Deaths Linked to Smoking

As if you didn’t need another reason to quit

BY October 25, 2016

We all know smoking is bad. But here’s another statistic that helps put into perspective just how bad it is. A new study from JAMA Internal Medicine says that close to 30 percent of deaths from cancer are due to smoking. By far, quitting smoking is the best way for you to avoid getting cancer

The study also broke down the numbers state by state. Kentucky had the unfortunate distinction of being the No. 1 state with the greatest percentage of smoking-related cancer deaths. (Utah had the least.) Florida was about average. It ranked 18th but had about 29 percent of cancer deaths due to smoking.
