Feel Good

What Is “Health Food,” Anyway?

The government would like to know.

BY September 29, 2016

Kind of strange when you think about it—the FDA isn’t quite sure what “healthy” means, exactly. For decades, it’s been operating under an old guideline for package labeling that really doesn’t make sense anymore. So, it’s revising it. And it’s asking for your help.

The goal is to give consumers reliable information when it comes to what to buy at the grocery store (and also nudge the food industry to produce healthier products). But the first step is to figure out a definition. Give your input here.

This is a similar process to what the FDA is going through for “natural.” The FDA doesn’t regulate the term, and it’s used willy-nilly on packaging. It hasn’t been until recently that the FDA is considering restricting its use.
