Seaworthy Makes a Splash

The “new nautical” look is a cool style for spring

BY January 30, 2017

In the early part of the last century, Coco Chanel wore a Breton striped top while in the French Riviera, launching a garment that started off as a functional sailor’s shirt into the fashion stratosphere. One hundred years later, we’re still in love with la marinière and all things nautical. While there are key elements to the mode—blue, white and, yes, stripes—designers are constantly reimagining the formula to keep this fashion staple as fresh as ocean air. Although familiar motifs such as ropes, anchors and sailboats are integral to the look, the “new nautical” style also veers off toward uncharted horizons.
