Singles Scene

Michael Korb explores the flirty, funny and sometimes frightening world of dating in Southwest Florida

Avoiding the Crazy

I’ve dated my fair share of loons: the Lindsay Lohans, Winona Riders and girls with ties to the occult. (Every boy wants a girl just like the girl who married dear old dad.) But under most circumstances, crazies are to be avoided at all costs—assuming you’re looking for a serious relationship. (If, on the other hand, you’re looking for entertainment, jump in with both feet.) However, the saddest part about crazy is that people don’t seem to grow out of it. When you’re younger you assume that people get more normal as they work their way into the magic of adulthood. And once they become parents, they must certainly have their act together. But nothing could be further from the truth. Case in point: I was recently messaged by a late-30s single parent acquaintance...

Lunch, the most important meal of your dating day?

As someone who prefers to wake up around 9:30 a.m. (Pacific Time), I find lunch to be the most important meal of the day. And yet, so few people take this time to get the proper nutrients they need—or, from a more singular purpose, to look for a potential date. We seem resigned to the fact that dating options don’t make themselves known until happy hour. But let me tell you from experience, seeing people in the bright light of day can save you a world of regret later. After all, pinot grigio goggles have a surprisingly short shelf life. With that in mind we continue our tour of area dating locales and have become a regular patron of Brio Tuscan Grille At Waterside Shops in Naples. From a single guy point of view the restaurant is frequented by a large number of attractive...

Moody Guys Get the Girl

This just in from a University of British Columbia study recently published in the American Psychological Association journal Emotion. Men and women are different! It seems that women are attracted to men who seem brooding and moody over men who appear happy and well-adjusted. Conversely, men dig chicks who beam and seem delighted. More than 1000 adult (probably Canadian) participants rated the sexual attractiveness of hundreds of images of members of the opposite sex in various states of emotion—happiness, pride and shame. Women found the happy guys least attractive, preferring guys who looked proud or powerful or moody and ashamed. (Ladies, for the record, I’m ashamed that I’m proud of my moodiness.) Guys, on the other hand, do not like proud girls. (Like I always...

Facebook Hunting Grounds

As Facebook continues to be a dominant force in virtually everyone’s lives, it should come as no surprise that the online giant is being turned into a massive singles bar. When you can actually list your relationship status as “It’s complicated,” you can figure there’ll be some inquiry. In fact, there are some among us who are such Facebook stalkers that they have tagged their favorite targets and pounce as soon as that someone’s status goes to “single.” It’s creepy, but the early bird gets the worm (or a restraining order—it’s a fine line). When pressed to admit if they’ve ever cyber-stalked a potential mate, sober locals at BURN By Rocky Patel in Mercato were hesitant to admit to anything. Luckily, the less sober turned out to be goldmines of...

Sweatin' with the Hotties

The gym can be a magical place filled with members of the opposite sex sculpting their bodies just for you. And as a single person, you should probably return the favor. After all, there’s a pretty good chance you need to work off the Margherita pizza and appletini you had with the girls. And while your friends will repeatedly tell you that the gym, whether it be the YMCA, LA Fitness, NCH Wellness Centers, Lifestyles or wherever, is a horrible place to meet someone—because they’ve never met anyone there even after years of aerobics classes—nothing could be further from the truth. These places are packed full of singles. It’s literally like shooting fish in a barrel. The problem is that no one pulls the trigger. No one talks to anyone. We are a nation of wimps, too...
