With an annual average of 230 sunny days, it’s no wonder Florida is known as the Sunshine State. But with this glorious statistic comes the need to protect our skin from the intensity of the sun’s rays. Sunscreens help prevent ultraviolet radiation from reaching the skin, and it’s recommended everyone wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect against both UVA and UVB rays (which cause photoaging and burning, respectively). Consider the demands of your lifestyle and how much sun exposure you anticipate when choosing what’s right for you. Look for an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or greater for everyday wear in minimal sun exposure, but if you’re active and spend a lot of time outside, you’ll need a “sports” or water-resistant product that stays put on your skin when you perspire. Regardless of the SPF, no product can protect you if you don’t wear it, so make applying sunscreen an essential part of your daily routine to safely enjoy the benefits of the sun without the damage.
