As he discussed with us in our July issue, AC/DC bassist and Southwest Floridian Cliff Williams is hanging it up. He played his last show of the band’s Rock or Bust Tour in Philadelphia on Sept. 20.
He also recorded a farewell to fans. “It’s time for me to step down,” he says. “I’m just ready to get off the road.” Watch the full video below.
As the band played the final chords of For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) at its Philly show, guitarist Angus Young coaxed the bass player to the front of the stage for one last bow. It was a fitting tribute to the soft-spoken Williams, who, for most of his 40 years with the band, preferred to stay out of the spotlight. See the last few minutes of their show below.
Williams mentioned in his farewell video that he’ll be spending more time with family. He and his family—wife Georganne and two children—have called Southwest Florida home for close to 30 years. He’s become ingrained in the local charity circuit, supporting The Heights Foundation and the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, among others. We named him one of our Men & Women of the Year in 2013.
