Restaurants are expected to have booze, but if you yen for something unique, Zen Asian BBQ is filling a niche at the edge of its chef Koko’s samurai sword (he was once a protégé of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto). As deftly as his menu combines house-made ramen and bibimbap, he has mixed his master’s award-winning pilsner and soba ales with thoughtful selections of sake and soju (Japanese and Korean rice wine). But an increasingly popular way to cut loose is with the sole cocktail, the spring-breaky Drunken Watermelon. It’s hollowed out and refilled with the pureed fruit, soju and straws, and it should be ordered early because there often are not enough to go around.
