And here you thought the Boot Scootin’ Boogie was just good old fun.
A study published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience showed that country dancing was actually a successful way to combat the decline in the brain’s processing power that happens as we age.
The study itself took dozens of senior citizens who rarely exercised and had them perform several physical fitness activities, including walking or balance training. Turns out, the people who were dancing regularly showed less decline in the brain than those in the other groups. The relatively complex choreography that happens in line dancing may be what keeps both the brain and body sharp.
This isn’t to say other types of dance couldn’t help, but it may be a good idea to start pulling out those old country records.
