If your New Year’s resolution was to lose a few pounds, you are likely looking for better way to do it than countless hours on the treadmill. And if you are a seasoned fitness buff, you are surely always looking for a way to spice up your workout routine.
Consider the OMfused class at the NCH Wellness Center.
I wasn’t entirely prepared for what awaited me at the OMfused class as impulse led me to it. The description mentioned something about Yoga, Tai Chi and martial arts, but I’ve found that descriptions often fall short of what a class actually is. Still, I decided to give it a shot.
This class was made to get you moving, but in a pretty, poetic kind of way. OMfused reminded me of my dancing days minus the pink leotard and tights. But since it’s been a few years since my last dance class (I was in grade school to be exact), performing the step-ball-change didn’t go as smoothly as I hoped, nor did adding the arm movements to the box-step. Despite these rhythmic slips, I found myself enjoying the class. The teacher, Giselle, broke down steps so that by the end nearly everyone was getting the hang of things. As a result, several of us improved our shimmy.
During the class, you are almost unaware that you’re performing Tai Chi and Yoga movements, at least until you get to the balance section. Holding balance postures takes core stability and focus, so nearly everyone (with the exception of the teacher, Giselle, and one over-achieving student) was swaying a bit.
So, even if you’ve never donned a tutu in your life and consider yourself to be lacking in the coordination department, try it. Moving is good for your soul.
