Here’s a quick way to reduce our landfill space: Let’s just start eating our food packaging. Actually, that may not be too crazy.
Researchers presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society this week about a newly developed type of packaging made from a milk protein. It looks like plastic, but it’s actually much better at protecting food from oxygen. And, if you’d like, you could eat it. (Researchers say it doesn’t have much taste.) Or, just let it biodegrade on its own.
This has led to the researchers experimenting with a whole host of other potential uses for this material, including a coating for cereal that would keep it crispy in milk.
