Pumping iron can help your body. But new evidence is showing how it can make your brain more buff, too.
A new study in The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society took a look at a group of women between the ages of 65 and 75. Researchers focused on the ones who had lesions in the white matter of their brains, then set them out on an exercise routine. They found that those who had lifted weights twice per week showed their brains were in much better shape at the end of the trial period compared to the participants who lifted less frequently or who just participated in a minimal workout.
The study gave insight into the fact that weight training may have more benefits than what we know, said researcher Teresa Liu-Ambrose, a professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She told The New York Times, “we are just really now gaining an appreciation for how impactful exercise can be.”
