Here’s frightening news for all those who wind down over a glass of red wine: A complaint filed late last week in California alleges that 28 wineries are violating state law by “knowingly producing, marketing and selling arsenic-contaminated wine and failing to warn consumers about the potential danger,” CBS News’ Los Angeles affiliate reported.
The plaintiffs allege the wineries are producing wines that contain “up to 500 percent or more than what is considered the maximum acceptable safe daily intake limit.”
The wines are bottled under 31 different brand labels, mostly lower-priced, lower-end wines. It’s far too soon to know whether the accusations will hold up under legal scrutiny and additional scientific testing. The safest bet for now: Keep your eyes on this case and don’t scrimp on your wine selections.
