The beach is beckoning this summer. Just make sure you’re taking care of your skin.
The Skin Cancer Foundation recently offered up some tips about how to stay safe in the summer sun. The biggest issue, of course, is how to protect yourself while you’re at the pool or beach. A few recommendations:
- Make sure your sunscreen has broad-spectrum protection. If you’re going to be outdoors for long, use a water-resistant sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays. Also, look for sunscreens that have an SPF of at least 30.
- Try to cover up when you can. A one-piece swimsuit can help repel those rays. Just make sure it has high UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor. Check out the foundation’s recommendations for high-UPF clothing.
- It’s OK not to be tan. The foundation recommends avoiding tanning all together. After all, tanning is just damaged caused to the skin in the first place. So, no level is truly safe.
