Florida’s roads are pretty safe senior citizens. And, yes, you read that right.
Caring.org, an online resource for older adults, conducted a study looking at stats from the U.S. Census Bureau and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They ranked all 50 states based on percentage of fatal traffic crashes among the 65 and up population compared to total percentage of the population.
Florida, as it turns out, is the second-safest state. About 20 percent of the state’s population is senior citizens—the same percentage of fatal crashes among the elderly. The study points out that Florida does require frequent renewals for drivers 80 and over, perhaps helping bring down the fatality rate. Also, keep in mind Florida’s nice weather, which is much easier to drive in than, say, the harsh conditions of the Northeast.
The safest state: Connecticut
The most dangerous state: Rhode Island
This news also comes on the heels of a study by the CDC that the United States in general has a high rate of deadly car crashes.
