Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, with coronary artery disease being the most common form. But if you live in the South—and Florida, in particular—this type of heart disease is affecting many more people than it is elsewhere.
HealthGrove broke down county-by-county the prevalence of coronary artery disease in the senior population (See the chart below.)
Lee and Collier counties have slightly above average rates compared to counties nationwide, but some of the highest rates in the country are just next door in Miami-Dade, Hardee and DeSoto. (The highest is Sutton County, Texas, with a 59 percent rate.)
Colorado and the West, in general, had some of the lowest rates. HeathGrove explored some of the reasons for this in their blog post here.
