This year, Fourth of July celebrations are looking a little different. The annual fireworks show at the Naples Pier has been cancelled, bars are temporarily shut down again and we are still being advised to practice social distancing.
Still, there are plenty of safe activities you can engage in for the holiday. From outdoor gatherings to distance-safe live music shows, here are some local events that allow you to celebrate the 4th with a bang.

A Historic Display in Downtown Fort Myers
In place of the city’s usual Freedom Fest block party, Downtown Fort Myers plays host to the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team. On Saturday, the group will put on a patriotic show, with the skilled pilots flying planes that were used for World War II training. Check the River District’s Facebook page for updates on times.
Drive-In Fireworks Shows in Bonita and Naples
For those looking to get out of the house, Bonita Springs and Naples host drive-in fireworks shows. Head to the Collier County Fairgrounds from 7 to 8:15 p.m. throughout the holiday weekend to watch light shows during the three-day Out of This World 4th of July Drive-In Celebration. The crowd is limited to 300 vehicles.
Then, gates open at 8 p.m. for the Bonita Springs Drive-In Firework and Laser Light Show at the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Racing and Poker site on Saturday, July 4. The show, which starts at 9 p.m., will also be streamed live on the city’s website, as well as on Bonita Television.
A Patriotic Party in Ave Maria
Dress in your best red-white-and-blue garb for Oil Well Craft Beer’s 4th of July Celebration, which is catered by Martin Fierro Restaurant. The outdoor party runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and includes a contest for best dressed person and best decorated golf cart, car, bike or motorcycle.
Independence Day Race
Lace up your sneakers and get ready to compete in the USA Independence Day 5k Virtual Run, hosted by Elite Events. The competition starts at 7 a.m., but runners can complete the course and log their times anytime between 5:30 and 11:30 a.m. Participants are eligible for a grand prize of $30,000 worth of Zulu Audio wearable Bluetooth speakers.
Captiva’s Celebration
’Tween Waters Island Resort & Spa on Captiva has a roster of activities planned for its 4th of July Weekend. This includes a scavenger hunt, as well as concerts from country musician Brinley Addington and rocker Chris Taggart on Friday and Saturday. There’s also a fishing derby on Saturday morning, and a screening of Toy Story 4 for the kids on Saturday night.
