Get Rid of Pesky Mosquitoes Naturally

Here are three tips from bloggers to repel insects during the summer.

Mosquitoes thrive in the very weather that Southwest Florida is best known for—hot days and muggy, rainy afternoons in the summer.

The abundance of rain leads to water pooling near homes and in backyards, creating the perfect breeding ground for the pesky insects to spread disease and their painful “bites.”

Before running to the store to grab “OFF!” spray, which contains DEET, try some of these more natural insect repellents that are gentler on your skin (and on your mind).

  1. DIY Non-Toxic Mosquito Repellent Luminaries ­– These lemon-, lime-, rosemary- and essential oil-packed mason jars combine the fresh ingredients of summer with the practicality of insect repellent. They last two to three days and are a decorative, yet functional, piece to add to your outdoor space.
  2. Essential Oil Spray – Mix 2 1/2 teaspoons of any of the listed essential oils with 1 cup of grain alcohol and mist throughout your house to have insects running for the hills.
  3. Mosquito Trap – This trap naturally creates carbon dioxide to attract mosquitoes and is good for up to two weeks.
