HOT DISH: Fired Up for the 60th Annual Farm-City BBQ

Not cooking for Turkey Day or way ahead of the game? If you have time, stop by the 60th annual Farm-City BBQ, a tradition the day before Thanksgiving, and this year’s is Nov. 25.

From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., $20 buys you a Shula’s steak (the restaurant is one of the sponsors) and veggies freshly picked from Immokalee that are grilled right there for you—plus unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks.

Started as a way to connect the area’s urban population with the folks who were supplying their food, the barbecue is still one of the only places where you can eat standing next to a state senator and a real-deal cowboy. And since the organizers over the past six decades have been diligent with securing sponsorships, many of the day’s proceeds benefit local youth programs, like 4-H, Key Club International and Junior Deputies League. In fact, the location of the giant cook-out changes every year, but this year it's at the Junior Deputies’ Camp Discovery, a camping site on the corner of route 951 and Rattlesnake Hammock Road.
