On the beach and listed in the National Registry of Historic Places (it’s on the site of the island’s first schoolhouse), Old Captiva House, which has welcomed guests since 1931—including noted names, such as Charles Lindbergh and J.N. “Ding” Darling—has entered a new phase of gracious Floridian hospitality.
After nearly 100 years of serving up seafood and stiff cocktails to locals and visitors, the restaurant that’s nestled in the ’Tween Waters Island Resort & Spa has just come out on the other side of a multimillion-dollar renovation. The dining room, still in beachy whites but now with a more modern flair, has been completely transformed, and the kitchen is the epitome of a high-tech 21st century oasis. Making the shift even more comprehensive, chef Greg Nelson released a refreshed menu with the reopening in May to complement the updated look covering a wide range with plenty of sushi rolls, escargots simmered in white wine, garlic and tomatoes and several preparations of sea bass among other fresh catches.
