Maybe all that healthy eating is paying off.
Collier County residents have a life expectancy of about 83.4 years, making it the highest in the state and among the top in the country, according to a new study in JAMA Internal Medicine. The study looked at changes in life expectancy from 1980 to 2014. South Florida, in general, was above the national average of 79.08 years. Lee County life expectancy was close to 81 years.
On a more sobering note, researchers found a gap in life expectancy in this country depending on where you live. While the counties with the highest average life expectancy came close to 87 years, some communities in Indian reservations, Appalachia and the South were at or below 70 years. That gap has also been slowly widening since 1980, according to the study.
