In a study of 12 million women and 260,000 cases of breast cancer, the American Institute for Cancer Research and World Cancer Research Fund has found that one alcoholic drink per day is enough to increase women’s risk of breast cancer.
From the ongoing study, a new comprehensive report shows convincing evidence that links physical activity, weight gain and alcohol to breast cancer. In the 10 large cohorts analyzed of premenopausal women, more than 4,000 women developed breast cancer.
While the research shows that the increased risk of breast cancer is just 5 percent, it is still “statistically significant.”
The institute estimates that one in three cases of breast cancer in the United States could be prevented if women drank less alcohol, maintained a healthy weight and exercised routinely.
