Reading that ingredient list on the back of your moisturizer can make it seem like you need a degree in chemical engineering. Enter the clean beauty movement. “Clean beauty” means putting an emphasis on natural ingredients while avoiding silicones, synthetic fragrances and other chemicals. Estimates put the natural beauty product demand increasing at a rate higher than that of more mass-market products. Retailers like Target are responding by being more transparent with ingredient lists and banning products with chemicals like formaldehyde. Still, don’t let a label fool you. The FDA does not approve beauty products. So, dig deeper when you see something that claims to be “natural” or “organic.”
