A Cornell University professor found that the fall months, particularly mid-October through mid-November, tend to be the time when Americans weigh the least. According to his research, weight peaks during the holidays then slowly works its way off during the spring and summer. “Anything that happens in these next 10 weeks, on average, takes about five months to come off,” Brian Wansink told The New York Times.
Interestingly, he found that Americans start gaining weight in the actual run up to Thanksgiving.
If anything (aside from making us slightly depressed), Wansink says his research might help people become more aware during the holiday season of excessive weight gain. He pointed out that people who frequently stepped on the wireless scale he used in the study tended to gain less weight than those who tended to avoid it.
