The cat’s meow right now isn’t exactly what you may picture.
Two morning and midday joints that debuted in Fort Myers each have a doggone adorable theme—and clever eats that would attract any creature in his or her right mind.
Skinny Dogz Brunchery (239-362-2693, facebook.com/skinny-dogz-brunchery) is a cousin of the lauded Fat Katz Sports Bistro (a cross-pollination of gastropub and sports bar), and while this one is decidedly a daytime locale in a newly erected light blue cottage in the Gateway from the same owners, some features have made their way over. Besides the plethora of tables, there’s an extra eating bar behind a dine-in counter, with plenty of stools in front of flat-screens (only, here mimosas and coffee are more the speed). And, as expected, the food is enough to make you bark or meow in delight. Scratch-made biscuit Benedicts are so buttery, so crumbly, you barely need the oozy eggs and creative toppings (but how about sofrito hollandaise, pork belly and plantains?). All kinds of pastries are batched on-site, and build-your-own chicken and waffles are as irresistible as they are fun (Corn or bacon-cheddar Belgian? Breast or wings? Honey hot sauce or maple syrup?).
Closer to the central business district, Bullig Coffee and Bites (staytrueandbeme.com), with a French bulldog mascot, has its share of waffles (including an Instagram-worthy “bubble” capped with Nutella, and a savory pulled pork one). But the smaller café environment lends itself to the house specialty, some of the most finely crafted espresso drinks in Southwest Florida, like the To Bee or Not to Bee latte sweetened with Florida honey.
