When one of this year’s best new restaurants opens its doors extra-early for a free helping of house-made chorizo scramble with fried potatoes, you need to plan on being there—not to mention it’s for an amazing cause.
The 8 a.m. breakfast on April 16 at 7th Avenue Social is the kickoff for the Ride for The Shelter, a fundraiser spearheaded by three “Spokes”men who will embark on 1,200-mile, 12-day bike ride after having their fill of homemade granola with yogurt, local fruits and organic honey (among other Florida-Southern dishes). They’re journeying from Naples to Washington, D.C., to meet with Capitol Hill officials to bring awareness to the efforts of The Shelter for Abused Women & Children’s Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence (GADV) initiative, which calls upon men to take a stand and have a zero-tolerance policy for aggression.
The team includes The Social’s owner, Colin Estrem, and friends Glen Schwesinger, VP of investments at UBS, and Gordon Kellam, managing director and financial adviser for BB&T.
While this is a celebratory event and the entrance is free, The Shelter is requesting that people RSVP to Tamika Seaton (tseaton@naplesshelter.org or 239-775-3862). The “Spokes”men have reached two-thirds of their fundraising goal so far, and even $25 makes a difference—think of it as what you’d normally pay for bottomless coffee, juice, Anson Mills grits and a roasted tomato, cheese and egg tartelette from one of the best restaurants in town.
