If you’re like a lot of Americans these days, you’re stressed. One of the worst effects of stress is how it can keep you up at night, and before you know it, you’re not just stressed out but tired and stressed out. That’s miserable.
Everyone stresses at some point; it’s how you manage it that matters. Time offers a few tips on how to chill out before bed.
Keep a “worry journal.” Write down your anxieties before bed. It will give you a chance to think them through.
Don’t toss and turn. If you wake up in the middle of the night, don’t just lie there for hours on end. If you find you don’t fall back asleep immediately, get up and do something relaxing (but stay off your phone) until you feel sleepy again.
Switch up your bedroom. Little things can throw off your sleep, especially when stressed. Make sure you’re bedroom is cool, quiet and dark. If your partner snores, perhaps it’s time to invest in earplugs—or move to a different room.
