GL_MAY17_COVER
There's no Photoshop gimmicks for our May cover. That's actually a 1964 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet overlooking the beach at Lowdermilk Park. Behind the scenes, this took a little finagling to make happen.
Thanks to Jim Hollars and the Evergaldes Region of the Porsche Club of America, we got a pristine machine to photograph. But the challenge came in getting the car out near the beach.
There’s a big catch here—cars aren’t allowed on the beach (so don’t get any ideas). We worked with the city of Naples to get the proper permitting to at least inch our classic car toward an opening in the foliage. The key piece of equipment here is the sheet of plywood you see in the photos below. We had to keep that under the engine (located in the trunk of this particular car) to catch any oil that might drip (which never did). And, so we weren’t literally spinning our tires at the end, we used it as traction to get the car out of the sand afterward.
Take a look at how it happened.
