Want to get ripped? Better add another plate to the barbell. Or maybe not.
Bucking conventional wisdom a bit, a new study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that heavier is not necessarily better. Researchers took experienced weight lifters and split them into two groups. One group lifted heavier weights at fewer repetitions than the other group. Both groups basically lifted until they were tired. In the end, no significant difference was shown in muscle growth between the two groups.
This isn’t to say one way is recommended over the other, as researchers pointed out. Just that lifters can feel more flexibility to do whatever they’re more comfortable with.
