America is getting healthier. But we still have a lot of work to do.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Healthy People 2020 has been tracking America as a whole in more than 1,200 quantifiable health measurements. A mid-term review shows that Americans have already met about 40 percent of their goals. Yay for us.
We’re exercising more, kids are smoking and drinking less, infant deaths are down, and air quality is much better.
However, we’re stalling in other areas. Boo for us.
Obesity rates haven’t budged, binge drinking is still a problem, and not enough people have a primary care doctor. The suicide rate is getting worse (in part due to the fact that depression in teens is more prevalent). And, our oral health has actually regressed in recent years, too.
