The folks at Caring.org, an online publication and resource for caregivers, seem to be thinking the unthinkable: Florida may not be a great place to grow old.
Take a second to wrap your head around it. We here in Southwest Florida are used to accolades.
But their rankings tried to take an objective look at places to grow old. The editors compiled their data from a half-dozen indexes that speak toward quality and affordability of health care and support for caregivers.
The best place to grow old: South Dakota.
According to the ranking, “Seniors in South Dakota have access to high-quality health care and senior care, with costs of care hovering around the national average (about $36,000 yearly for an assisted living community, and around $52,000 for a home health aide).”

Florida ended up ranking 31st. Hurting the state was a low score for quality of life and health care. At least feel good that Florida didn’t end up in the bottom 10.
