Next time you need a boost to finish your workout, just think about how great you’re doing. Then, keep telling yourself that.
A study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise took a look at an experimental method that motivated people to push through a tough workout. Basically, the concept involves re-framing negative thoughts. Instead of “I’m tired,” think (or even tell yourself), “I’m doing great.” Focus not on the hardship but rather on the fact that you’re pushing through the hardship.
Turns out it works. Researchers found that once instructed to think positively, participants could exercise for 25 percent longer and sustain higher levels of discomfort (i.e. working out in a hot environment).
More proof the power of positive thinking works.
