When it comes to vital statistics, here’s one that’s truly astounding: 95 percent of women are wearing the wrong size bras! There are a number of reasons for this: weight loss or gain; hormonal changes, for example; but the main one is that we tend to forget how long we’ve had them! Guidelines on how often to replace a bra vary from every three to six months, but it’s more relevant to think in terms of the number of times a bra is worn and washed: 100 wearings/100 washings, and it’s time to replace it.
I recommend having a bra fitting at least once, preferably twice, a year. This is important not just for comfort, but from a style perspective: If a bra doesn’t fit correctly, then nothing that goes on top of it is going to look right, either. A well-fitting bra is literally the foundation for everything else worn over it.
We also need to have different bras for different looks and activities. To build a bra wardrobe, start with some everyday basics such as seamless bras in white, black, and a flesh tone (one that matches your own). Then add a convertible bra which provides a variety of different strap options, plus a couple of sports bras for working out, running or other active pursuits.
A cami or camisole bra gives the appearance of a lacy tank or camisole worn under a shirt or blouse but eliminates the need for an extra layer, which, in the Florida heat, is something we can do without. Whatever bra you choose, its supporting role should make you the star.
