MHK Architecture: Chair by Kirby Joyner
Gulfshore Life’s Chairs for Charity spotlights MHK Architecture’s inventive chair by Kirby Joyner, who sought to balance the piece’s original character with a vibrant, modern update. Joyner introduced a striking accent color and applied intricate macramé techniques to fill open spaces, finishing the chair with handmade tassels that add movement, texture and a playful, contemporary touch.
DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT Q&A
Where did you find the vintage chair?
Facebook marketplace.
What were the materials used to redesign the chair?
Macrame cord, embroidery thread and wooden beads.
Where did you find the inspiration for your chair design?
The design inspiration began with the chair itself. After weeks of searching thrift shops and online, I found a piece that immediately felt full of potential. Its floral motif, natural cane weaving, and negative spaces guided the redesign, honoring the chair’s original charm while bringing it new life.
What was the process of designing and putting together the chair?
The goal was to strike a balance between the chair’s original character and a fresh, vibrant update. I began by selecting an accent color, then explored macramé techniques to fill the open spaces with subtle, intricate detail. After many hours of weaving and braiding, I finished the piece with handmade tassels that add movement and playful texture.
How would you incorporate your chair into a space?
I wanted to create a design that could be versatile for any space. The materials allow for indoor or outdoor use, while its vibrant design could work as an accent piece or a functional chair for daily life, bringing personality and charm wherever it lives.
