The Comedic Rise of Hannibal Buress
Hailing from the vibrant streets of Chicago, comedian Hannibal Buress began his stand-up journey in 2002 at Southern Illinois University’s Big Muddy Room. Inspired by the guidance of close friends and sharpened in Tony Trimm’s “Sunday School sessions,” Buress quickly made his mark.
By 2006, he landed a breakout spot in Montreal’s Just for Laughs “New Faces” showcase, soon followed by his first international appearance on Holland’s Late Night with Jörgen Raymann. What followed was a string of acclaimed specials—Animal Furnace, Live From Chicago, Hannibal Takes Edinburgh, Comedy Camisado, and Miami Nights—each a testament to his distinct voice and dry wit.
In 2009, a spontaneous booking on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon sparked a meeting with Seth Meyers, leading to a writing role at Saturday Night Live. Though only one of his sketches aired, Buress credits the win to a creative spark from his cousin Percy.
