standing
OK, we get the idea—sitting is bad for you. Studies have made that abundantly clear over the past few years. It’s gotten to the point where the concept of a desk is being rethought.
But for all the sitting we do, just how much should we be standing? A team of international health experts convened to answer that question. Their suggestion, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, is for the desk-bound to stand for at least two hours a day while at the office.
“To achieve this, seated-based work should be regularly broken up with standing-based work, the use of sit-stand desks or the taking of short active standing breaks,” the researchers write.
Once you’re used to standing for two hours while at work, the next goal should be to aim for four hours. Yeah, that seems like a lot of activity—and may not be possible in some professions. But there are several ways to combat chronic sitting. Here are some suggestions to keep you moving throughout the day.
