Once the creative stomping grounds of island greats including Ikki Matsumoto and Robert Rauschenberg, Periwinkle—and its subtropical side streets—houses nonprofit arts center BIG ARTS as well as many of Sanibel’s colorful art galleries, including cooperative Hirdie Girdie Art Gallery, Ikki’s former studio-turned-co-op Tower Gallery and local favorite Rachel Pierce Art Gallery, where the former news anchor creates vivid paintings of Florida’s underwater creatures.
